Singh Case Study

A Deck Makeover with a Patio and Walkway

The complete backyard design using 3d landscape design software is a great way to show the project before it is installed

LOCATION:  Palmer Township, Pennsylvania

THE OUTDOOR SPACE

The house was recently constructed and the homeowners had been living there for a year.  The side and back terrain has a consistent downslope away from the house, creating a difficult area to create space and allow access.   The builders of the house had constructed a pressure treated deck that created immediate space however the deck was too small and access into the backyard was awkward.   There is a recessed walkout basement with concrete steps on the opposite back corner of the side of the garage.  The side property contains all grass but also has the slope mentioned previously.

THE BACKYARD WISH LIST:

The Singh’s were looking to create access from the driveway to the backyard.  The backyard then needed plenty of work.  They were looking to replace the new deck that was constructed by the home builders and they wished to create a larger deck space for the main entertainment area.    Our client’s needed better access to the basement steps area as well.  They also wished to create a patio space as another area for larger gatherings to filter into.  Ultimately, the homeowner was looking to create as much space as possible and design a comfortable flow of circulation from the garage on the side to the opposite side of the house.

THE OUTDOOR LIVING DESIGN

We created an outdoor design that eliminated the existing deck completely.   Our new deck design was the anchor for the rest of the project.  Since the back of the house had such an awkward shape, we had designed the new deck to create one long space that expands for more than half the size of the length of the entire back of the house.   We designed a set of steps at each end of the deck; one side for the side walkway that leads to the driveway and garage area, and the other side of the deck that leads to the patio space.   Access to the basement steps lines up perfectly between the deck and patio.  We added retaining walls where needed and even added a little more wall for decorative and functional reasons.

THE FINISHING TOUCHES:

We added Trex lights into the posts and step risers on the deck.  We added stone beds where it was needed and backfilled all areas with topsoil and seed.   Customer-bought plants topped off the project and created the space they always wanted.
